Life in France

About a month ago, Antoine and I decided to leave Puerto Rico. Where to? We were not quite sure, so we headed to the south of France for a trip of kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, skiing, hiking... anything fun, you name it, and we're up for it!!!

We are gathering our thoughts at the moment, and making decisions on what is going to come next.

In the mean time, this is what has been going on:

Beauduc Trip

Beauduc is large bay an hour from Marseille, where the wind almost always blows, super fun flat water on the inside (see pics below), and little waves for perfect kickers on the outside. When it's under 25 knots, it's perfect... but you can also wake up one morning, and it will be blowing 60 knots! That happened to us! Antoine could not hold on to his 3.7m windsurf.... so time to go!

Carcassone Trip

I had never seen Carcassone: it's a fortified city about 1h and a half away from Montpellier, and that also happens to have a great windsurfing/kitesurfing spot next to it: Lac de Guanguise (see above). It was kinda of gusty, but still fun to be in fresh water, and in a new place.

Carro Trip
Who wants strong wind? Carro in 45 minutes away from Marseille, and is a Tramontane spot. It's a beautiful place with waves (not easy to find in the south of france), but the only problem is that it blew 50 knots constantly gusting to 60 all the time we were there! I tried windsurfing on 3.7m but could not even hold on to that. I mostly spent my time taking pictures then!

And then of course, there was the amazing skiing trip in Chamonix

Fun Times in PR: Today was a light day in PR, so again, perfect for me to keep on trying the foil board! It's really starting to get fun, but still feel like I am on a roller coaster. On my 5th time taking it out now! It's funny because it feels like learning on how to kiteboard all over again! The first time I tried it, I could barely put the board on my feet! Oh and also, I am pretty sure I'll steel legs with it!

Wind at about 10 knots, flat ocean.... hum let me think: let's take out the FOIL!!! Antoine and Phil at Kitesurfpr have one, so I went for it.
I tried it out yesterday for the 2nd time (1st time was ... a long time ago), and actually had a lot of fun. It took me a little while just to figure out how to put my feet on the things!, and then how to go straight... but I eventually got it. I also had to go for shorter runs because of the reefs inside the bay! Now I just have to learn how to get it out of the water, and keep it hovering there... instead of just climbing and then crashing!

America's Cup sailing

I was lucky to go sailing today on one of the America's cup boats in the Auckland Harbor. The 2 hours sailing went by really fast. The sails are huge (205 sq. meters for the main sheet, and 400 for the spi!), and the whole boat is just amazing.

I had a really good time here in Auckland with my sisters, and the local kiteboarding crew. It is now time to go back to Puerto Rico: home sweet home, waves and good bye wetsuit!

Rangitoto Volcano

My trip in New Zealand is coming to its end, and I am leaving tomorow. As a good tourist, I took a day trip to the Rangitoto volcano in the center of the Auckland bay. The view was absolutely stunning from up there!

Raglan

Raglan is on the west coast about 2 hours away from Auckland. There are 2 spots: the wave and the flat water one. We kited at the flat water which is a river mouth with a lot of current. The current was opposite to the wind, and pretty fun to just sit in the water and start going upwind!

The weather was pretty bad when we arrived, but soon cleared up and the wind got steady around 20 knots: big jumps on my 9m. My sisters and I were able to all kite together...it's pretty rare, and we really enjoyed it.

Later on, we went to checked out the surf spot... but I decided to stay out of the water. Too much current for me!

Little "Bucks" Bucklands Beach

The wind picked up early this morning... even before I was up! My transportation (my sister's cars!!!) was busy today, so I decided to give the "in front of the house" spot a try... and it ended up being quiet fun. It was a little bit on the gusty side because of the wind direction, and I shared the space with the ferry... but I enjoyed kiting powered up on my 7m. Big jumps guaranteed!

Shoal Bay, Auckland

Yesterday, South-West wind, my sister and I went to a spot called Shoal Bay on the North Shore of Auckland.

We met up with the WSP team there, whose shop is 10 minutes away. We got really lucky with the weather: sun and wind.

There was actually PLENTY of wind: I would guess about 30 knots! It had been a while since I had not kited in that much wind, and it was really fun. It was the "elevator" kite session!!!

I also tried those new skate board that for some reason (probably to make it impossible for me to to dit) are split in 2!!! The end result was not very impressive!

New Zealand Trip

I have now been in New Zealand for 2 weeks, and it's been a lot of fun: as much for kiting, checking out the island, and hanging out with my sisters.

The first week we checked out 3 different kite spots: Pine Harbour, Tamaki River and Waihee beach.... all kind of on the gusty side, but lots of fun on my 7m and 9m. It's NZ's windy season right now, so there is no lack of wind. I also met with Chucky at WSP store while kiting at Tamaki. Since the wind forecast looks awsome for the coming week, we are probably going to get together to check out new kite places. I am here with my sisters who know the island really well for kiting so it makes it really easy to know where to go and when (I am a little lost with the wind directions and tides!).
It's my 4th time in New Zealand, but each time I am amazed with how beautiful it is. We've been taking small day trips to the cool places around Auckland.

This past week, we went to the South Island. We did not take any kites there... because the water temperature does not go above 8 degrees celcius there... and that's kind of cold for me!!! We mostly hiked, took a lot of pictures, and sampled NZ's typical fish and chips!

After a very long trip (took the whole week-end), we are finally in New Zealand. I already know it's going to be a great trip! I stopped by the shop WSP (http://www.windsurfing.co.nz/) yesterday, and learned that November is the windiest season in New Zealand, so it should be promising!

I will be updating my "kite calendar" where I will post where I go kiting. We are gonna go to Pine Harbour this afternoon, which is one of the best places to go on south west wind. It's definitely a change for me to have to deal with wind directions and tides! I will probably take some pics this afternoon and will post them later on.

Some pictures taken with my 2010 Hifi 9m, in Gruissan (France) this past summer. I absolutely love this place: you drive on the beach for 15 minutes, and you get perfectly flat water, off-shore (just don't loose your kite!), 15-35 knots depending on the days, and everything with the Pyrenees for a backdrop!

Puerto Rico Seven Seas

With a light North wind in San Juan, we decided to head out East of Puerto Rico, and went to Seven Seas. It is 1h drive from San Juan, and one of the most beautiful bays I have seen. The wind was light, so I used a 12m 2010 Envy, and was able to ride for a little bit.
This bay is well known for manatees and turtles... but unfortunately did not see any.

After I was done riding, we took a few pics of an instructional that I will soon post on my blog.

Yesterday was an epic wave session day: about 18 knots, powered on my new 9m Hifi, side-side-off, over head, glassy, sunny, very very uncrowded ... and also unexpected. We don't usually get those conditions in October, so it made the whole thing even better. It was really my first good wave session of the season... and I have to say, I was pretty excited. If the rest of the year is like that... it should be pretty fun!

Puerto Rico Action: grabbed KGB trial

Summer is not over in Puerto Rico yet, and we are still getting strong winds and flat water... perfect combination for me to pratice my freestyle.

First picture is a grabbed KGB... trial. I have been landing them... but not quite 100% yet! LOL. Working on it.

I have been riding with my new 2010 Aura: it has an insane amount of pop, which I think is helping me with my handlepasses. Or maybe it's just the really cool graphics...hum could be both!

Antoine has unfortunatly had to have surgery for ACL and meniscus... so he's now spending a lot of time taking pictures! He took all of those.

Kite Clinic pictures from Turkey

I was in Akyaka, in the south of Turkey, this week-end for a clinic. It was hosted by the school Gokova Ruzgar, and turned out really good. First of all, thank you to Yavuz and all the school's team for their great hosting!... and for the good wind they had ordered! We had wind all 3 days, and a lot of people came from all over Turkey to join in.

Camera issues

It's not so easy to choose the right camera and on top of it, buy it and it delivered in Puerto Rico! We first got a Canon Xsi... realised it was not fast enough, returned it (and that took a lot of time!), got a 40D, and of course it arrived broken, returned the 40D and finally got a refund! ... But we still don't have a camera! LOL

We are crossing our fingers for the new one that should arrive soon!!!

Kite Clinic in Turkey

Kite Clinic Went Great

My kiteclinic this past week-end went really well. We wind picked up early in the morning, and blew throughout the whole day. It was going a little bit up and down, which actually turned out to be pretty good, because the riders were able to try both the 9 and 12ms. Thanks to the school kitesurfpr.com, we were able to have Havocs, Session, Hifi and Hifi Comps for the demo, so everyone was stocked to try all those kites. A lot of riders also tried the board comps, and they were stocked on them. It was nice to see that a lot of the advanced riders liked the Hifi Comp a lot.

I don't have very many pictures to prove it... but that's because we were so busy kiting!

Wind, Sun and good pictures in Culebra and Vieques

This past week-end, Antoine and I were lucky to go boating and kiting in the islands east of Puerto Rico: Culebra and Vieques. We had been there before, but by ferry and we had visited the island like everybody else. This time, we went with some friends who have a yacht and they showed us all the little creeks that are only accessible by boat. The landscape is very preserved, and it's beautiful. The second night, we slept on the boat in one of the little creeks, and with the water night lights on, tarpons came feeding around the boat and it was crazy how many there were, and how little afraid of us they were!

New Camera First Pictures

We just got a new camera, and we finally got a chance to shoot the first pictures. The light is not that great, because in May in Puerto Rico... you never know what the weather will do! The pattern has been beautiful... until 10am!!! So Saturday, scheduled day of my kite clinic, we got to the beach early, started rigging, and went for an early kite session. The wind was good, but the clouds came early... so excuse the light!! Unfortunatly for the late risers, I had to cancel my clinic at 1pm... because of the rain. A few people got to try my Hifi Comps, and have already placed an order for them!!! Here are our first pictures:

The weather has not been ideal in Puerto Rico for the past days... that's unfortunatly typical of the month of May, which is the rainy season. Skiing in the French Alps

Last week, Antoine and I went skiing in a village called Les Contamines, close to Chamonix, in the French Alps. We had not gone skiing in a very very long time (actually never went together!!!), and had a really good time. The snow was fresh from the week before, nobody on the whole mountain, and nice weather. We also were able to hire a guide for a day and did some nice sping freeriding. Since it's so late in the season, we had to watch out for avalanches that were starting here and there!

Tomorow, Sunday, I was going to hold a free all level kite clinic in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico... but the weather does not look like it will permit it:
Sunday...Northwest winds 8 to 13 knots. Seas 6 to 7 feet in north swells. Scattered showers. Isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. www.noaa.gov
The chances of getting wind are really slim, so I will reschedule the clinic soon.

Sailing Eastern Coast of PR

Light winds were forecasted for the week-end, so we went sailing, with our friends Heather and Jim on their J-Boat Miss MaJic. We sailed on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, and stopped in Ikakos for a lunch break. The islands there are absolutly incredible: it's like being in a windy swimming pool! It was also fun trying to keep a straight course (picture), putting up and jibing the spinaker, and all that fun boating stuff!

Riding in PR with Kirsty Jones

Kirsty Jones (www.kirstyjones) and Richard Boudia got in Puerto Rico about 2 weeks ago, and we've been getting some really good kiting and surfing conditions since! We spent last week-end in the western part of Puerto Rico, where wind and waves are usually more powerful. Yesterday, a huge north swell hit Puerto Rico and we're now getting some double over head high waves! We had a little session right in Ocean Park, San Juan yesterday: playing in the shore break and jumping big!

I like changes, movements, new... so one day, I decided I needed a new website. Thanks for my good friend Karla Barrera from Puerto Rico, I have finally achieved creating a new blog and website. Please do not ask me what the deal is with the fish... I don't really know. I was originally going to go for sheeps... but then decided it really had nothing to do with kiteboarding!

Thank you Liquid Force, Misultin Zone and Kiian, for helping me achieve what I want: kiteboard, travel, and show people what kiteboarding is all about.

puerto rico = another winter in paradise

Puerto Rico is showing us one more winter some insane conditions: I have been riding powered up on my 9m Hifi Comp for the past months, some days with perfect head high waves, some days with flat water... I just could not ask for more! Sorry I have no pictures to show it... but will work on that soon!
Also, I and the school kitesurfpr.com have been teaching a lot of girls lately, and it's really nice to see more and more women are getting into kiting!

culebra trip

We did not get any wind... but it's abosultly gorgeous! My parents are visiting for 2 weeks, and we took a day trip to Culebra yesterday... first time in 5 years! Culebra is a US island east of Puerto Rico, and was declared Wildlife Refugee in 1976. It is the reason why it is still intact, not developped at all, and the perfect place for a zen kite holiday. We pumped up a kite hoping the wind would pick, but it unfortunaltly did not. We still took a couple of nice shots.... but we're definitly going back!

My new Hifi Comp is sick

Yesterday was a nice day: I was riding my new 7m HIFI COMP powered up in 25 knots! After only one session, I already know I love this kite. It's exactly what I was expecting: a direct feeling that is going to be perfect for tricks AND waves, it looped fast but still had some good grunt to it, and the bar also seems to pass easily on handlepasses! What else to ask for? Oh yes, it also looks really good with my personalised Kiian impression on it!

South coast week-end

The forecast for the week-end called for beautiful blue skies, but unfortunately no wind, so we headed to the south of Puerto Rico. We met with Heather and Jim, and took their boat out to enjoy the small mangroved islands. It ended up raining all day in San Juan, so were glad we took the short 1h30 drive south. Heather had her camera and took some fun pictures.

We anchored in a small channel by the mangroves, took the paddleboard out, enjoyed the beautiful clear waters, a manatee popped up a couple of times (we tried to chase it with the paddleboard... but we could not find it)... good times in the South Coast.

Saturday night, the weather forecast for sunday had changed and was now for 15 knots with head high waves in San Juan... so we headed back. We indeed got a killer session. The best part of that is that I got to ride my new wave board, and I loved it!

Not to scary... but it's still Halloween! I arrived dress up as a kiter (no need to dress up there... it was easy), and left ... still not dressed up... but with a nice pink froufrou! Good times in San Juan... as it always is when it's about partying in Puerto Rico.

Surfing Time

We have beautiful waves in San Juan, but no wind. That's when it's time to get the surfboards out! I had not surfed in probably a year and a half, and it felt really good. The waves were about head high: big enough to have fun, but not get pounded, just Antoine and I out there, sunny as always... just how I like it.

Winter Kite Clinics

I am starting my winter kite clinics again. They will be held all winter long in Puerto Rico.
Depending on the level of the clinic, the kiting spots will vary around Puerto Rico: San Juan, Rio Grande, Ponce and Aguadilla.

Last year's clinics were a lot of fun, but I realised that there was not that many advanced women kiters out there. By doing beginner and intermediate levels, I really want to push everyone to get on the water, and have as much fun as I do when I am out there!

For the Advanced Clinic, there will of course be the San Juan Wave Sessions! The wave season has already kicked off really well with 2 big swells.
